The Blue Jacket Awards 2024

We are proud to have organised the inaugural Blue Jacket Awards, to honour the creativity, collaboration and innovation of One Works project teams. The aim of the award is to celebrate the innovative ideas, communication skills and design process behind each project, rather than just the final outcome.

Twelve remarkable design teams presented their projects, showcasing an impressive range of creativity from Mongolia to Italy, Saudi Arabia to Romania, ranging from airports to public spaces, each reflecting the talent and commitment of their members. The way to select the projects was to select among all ongoing projects in One Works’s three main sectors and each project leader can submit up to two projects between the following categories:

  • Masterplanning

  • Architecture and Design

  • Engineering

Then, an external jury, a distinguished panel of industry leaders, including Sergio Roberti from Webuild, Sara Banti from Abitare Magazine RCS MediaGroup, and Francesco Cavalli from Leftloft, had the difficult task of selecting the final winners for 5 categories: Best Design and Best Architecture, Best Masterplan, Best Engineering, Best Idea/Innovation, Critics’ Award.

Winners: Projects and Motivations

Best Masterplan - Ex Arsenale, Pavia
A dreamy project, suspended between past and future, that utilizes green spaces and water to evoke a Leonardo-esque atmosphere. This interesting regeneration project not only focuses on the landscape by reopening an arm of the Ticino River, but also incorporates a typological study of buildings, proposing mixed-use solutions that combine tertiary and public functions. It has the potential to be a pilot project, identifying strategies to respond to climate change and new challenges in urban regeneration.

Best Architecture - New Passenger Terminal Building, Lanzarote
The new passenger terminal at Lanzarote International Airport is a smart and respectful project. It embraces the mindset of César Manrique, understands his sensitivity, and shares his intention to represent the uniqueness of Lanzarote. The architecture is inspired by the island's landscape in its forms and materials, reflecting the topography in the roof. It also introduces interesting innovations such as natural ventilation and efficient connections between levels, making the spaces pleasant and user-friendly.

Best Engineering - Venezia Airport, Terminal – Lotto 2b + BIM project
A long and complex design process utilizes engineering as both a tool and a strategy. Of particular interest is the innovative use of BIM design, which enhances architectural creativity while ensuring traceability and efficient management of all design, construction, and maintenance activities.

Best Idea/Innovation - Ministry of Environment – C70 Offices, Roma
The project for regenerating the buildings that house the Ministry of the Environment is a prime example of sustainable practice. It serves as a valuable model for future projects, particularly in contexts like Italy, where minimising land consumption and embracing building repurposing are crucial. This project encompasses all design aspects, from innovative tile design to the definition of supporting structures with striking and creative solutions.

Best Design - New Passenger Terminal Building, Lanzarote
The new airport terminal possesses a great expressive power, that is drawn from its interpretation of the local context. This is evident in the use of local materials like lava stone, the incorporation of traditional construction techniques such as green brise soleil, and the inspiration drawn from the murals of César Manrique.
